Lieutenant Walter Alfred Leland, born Lazarus, was an English officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.
He was born in 1893, in Liverpool, the eldest son of Australian parents Dr. Alfred Burnett and Eugenie Lazarus (née Gollin). Educated at Charterhouse, Leland was in Australia pursuing business interests when the war broke out in 1914. He promptly returned to Britain, where he enlisted in the army, and was commissioned into the 10th (Service) Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment in the November.[1]
Leland deployed abroard in May 1915, to the Dardanelles, during the Gallipoli Campaign against the Ottoman Empire. He arrived on attachment to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Dublin Fusiliers and was killed on 4 June.
He has no known grave and is commmemorated by the Helles Memorial.
