Flying Officer Joseph Philip Toeg was a British airman of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died during the Second World War.
He was born on 22 May 1919, in Mesopotamia, the son of Baghdadi parents Solomon Ezekiel and Hannah Toeg. His father was a broker in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Toeg attended Clifton and Exeter Colleges, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Civil Law.[1] He was naturalized as a British citizen in April 1941 while training to be a pilot.[2]
Toeg, a pilot with 98 Squadron, died on 24 June 1943, when his Mitchell II bomber (serial number FL216) was destroyed by flak while engaged on a raid against Guipavas Aerodrome, Brest. His family learnt of his death after Shanghai was liberated from Japanese occupation in 1945.[1]
