Sergeant John Shiro Matsuyama was an English airman of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died during the Second World War.
He was born in 1925, in Dorking, the son of Chuzo, a scenic artist from Japan, and Mabel Matsuyama (née Davies). His brother, George Ryozo, also served in the RAF, surviving the war with the rank of flying officer.
Matsuyama, a flight engineer, died on 17 October 1944, when his Handley Page Halifax (serial LL240), belonging to 1664 (RCAF) Heavy Conversion Unit, crashed at Green Lane, Melmerby, two minutes after taking off from RAF Disforth for a night-time navigation exercise.[1]
He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery. His six fellow crewmembers, all of the Royal Canadian Air Force, are buried at Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate.[1]
