Able Seaman Derek Arthur Bateman was an Irish sailor of the Royal Navy who died during the Second World War.
He was born the son of Reverend Thomas and M.G. Bateman, of Ardcarn, County Roscommon.
Aged 19, Bateman died on 21 August 1944, when the German U-boat U-344 torpedoed and sunk the sloop HMS Kite in the Barents Sea.
He has no knwon grave and is commemorated by the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
