Captain Cecil Lyon Hart was an English officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.

He was born in Kimberley, Cape Colony, the only son of Moss Alexander Hart and Marguerite Hart (née Gabriel). Hart received his education in Britain, attending University College School and studying at University College. He later passed his bar examinations and entered the Inner Temple as a law student. The outbreak of war in 1914 precluded his being called to the bar, which his Times obituary noted had been approaching.[1] Hart, who had belonged to the Jewish Lads' Brigade,[1] promptly enlisted and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), dated in the London Gazette to 15 August.[2]

Hart joined the 2nd Dukes on the Western Front on 29 December 1914, one of two officers and 25 men drafted to the battalion as reinforcements.[3] He died on 1 July 1916, aged 27, killed by a shell on the first day of the Somme Offensive,[4] while commanding No. 3 Company —- one of 3 officers and 18 men confirmed killed on that day.[5]

He is buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps.
