Arthur Henry

Second Lieutenant Arthur Richard Henry was an English officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.

He was born in Hendon, the eldest son of chartered accountant Alfred and Jessie Henry (née Kitsch), of Canterbury and London, respectively. Henry attended the City of London School and University College School, going on to be articled to his father's firm. He became a chartered accountant in 1911. Elsewhere, Henry occupied himself with the management of a number of clubs in the East End and served as an officer in the Jewish Lads' Brigade.[1]

Henry volunteered on the outbreak of the war, in 1914, joining the ranks of the 19th Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers, one of a number of battalions composed entirely of public schoolboys. He first went to the Western Front in 1915 and remained with his battalion until leaving for England in May 1916, to obtain a commission. He was gazetted in September, in the 5th Middlesex Regiment, but was attached to its 1st Battalion and returned to France in November. Aged 33, Henry died on 23 April 1917, in the Second Battle of the Scarpe.[1]

He is buried in Heninel-Croisilles Road Cemetery.
