Sergeant Alfred Julius Cowan was an English airman of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died during the Second World War.

He was born in North Bierley, the son of Henry Coppel and Annie Sarah Cowan (née Nathan), of Manchester and London, respectively.

Aged 28, Cowan, an observer with 1419 Flight, died on 11 April 1941 when his Armstrong Whitworth Whitley (serial T4165) stalled and crashed attempting to land at Tangmere. The Whitley was returning from an unsuccessful SOE mission and caught fire after the crash. The wireless operator, Sergeant Lloyd Morris, also died.[1]

He is commemorated at Golders Green Crematorium.
